From 12 to 16 September 2022, Make Way partners in Rwanda participated in a training on Intersectional Feminist perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). The sessions were facilitated by trainers from Akina Mama wa Afrika. The overall goal was to develop an intersectional feminist framework for use in SRHR advocacy by partners in the Make Way consortium in Rwanda.

From an intersectional feminist perspective, participants got a comprehensive picture of the data, gaps, progress, context, SRHR experiences and lived realities of people with compounded vulnerabilities. After a deep dive into feminism, including definition, types, core beliefs and guiding principles, participants engaged in practical exchange sessions about power dynamics.

An introduction to legal and policy frameworks on SRHR in Africa was provided, and the human rights based approach was used to dive into topics like access to contraception, Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), abortion rights, and rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender, Queer and others  (LGBTQ+).

The last day of the training focused on practical tips and examples of successful advocacy, and how to apply the information from the training in national-level advocacy in Rwanda.
